So Sayeth the Odinson: What If DC Assembled the Avengers?

Greetings from the Odinson,

What If DC Assembled the Avengers?  What if Marvel Gathered a Justice League? Part 1 of 2

Gathered together from the cosmic reaches of the universe, here in the great Hall of Justice are the most powerful forces of good ever assembled!

Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Flash, and the Martian Manhunter are the World’s Greatest Super Heroes.  They are the Justice League, the DC Universe’s first and last line of defense against the forces of evil and the occasional multiverse Crisis.

And there came a day unlike any other when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were united against a common threat.  On that day the Avengers were born!  To fight the foes no single hero could withstand!

Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and Black Widow are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.  They are the Avengers, the Marvel Universe’s premiere super team and the mighty vanguard that stands on that wall and opposes tyranny and injustice whenever and wherever it may rear its ugly head.

But, What If in an Elseworlds those roles were reversed?  What if the Marvel Universe was in need of some evenhanded lawfulness, and the DC Universe needed avenging?  Who would answer the call?

Part 1: What if DC Assembled the Avengers?

Let’s start off with the Heart, Brains, and Soul of the team.

Captain America – Steve Rogers is a man out of time, a super soldier from World War II that now lives in a world that has culturally left him behind.  However, bravery, trustworthiness, and compassion are traits that will never go out of style and the good Captain possesses these in spades.  He wields an indestructible shield and all those who oppose his mighty shield must yield!  Plus, Rogers has the will and voice to command and lead the world’s mightiest heroes into battle.

His DCU Analogue: Guardian – Jim Harper was a police officer that worked the toughest streets in World War II era Metropolis.  When the law sometimes fails to bring criminals to justice, Harper takes up his golden shield of justice to take them down.  He even took the Newsboy Legion under his wing and helped raise them to become stalwart citizens in society. When Harper reached his twilight years, super science transferred his consciousness into a clone of his younger self, so now Guardian continues the good fight for justice even today.

Iron Man – Tony Stark is one of the most brilliant scientists and inventors alive.  He is a man of great flaws and even greater potential.  A damaged heart, alcoholism, and inflated ego are obstacles he must continuously try to overcome.  However, when encased in a high tech suit of battle armor of his own creation, Stark becomes invincible and one of the world’s mightiest heroes.

His DCU Analogue: Steel – In the aftermath of the Death of Superman, John Henry Irons, a brilliant engineer, took it upon himself to fill the void left by the Last Son of Krypton’s demise.  He constructed a suit of high tech armor and with his powerful sledgehammer in hand, he has pounded out his own legend amongst the great heroes of the DC Universe.

Thor – He is the mighty god of thunder, wielder of the invincible hammer, Mjolnir, and protector of eternal Asgard and the realm of Earth.  As son of Odin, king of the gods, Thor is one of the mightiest heroes in Marvel’s entire pantheon, and through this heritage he has access to one of the most powerful forms of cosmic energy – the Odinforce.

His DCU Analogue: Orion – Orion is one of the mightiest New Gods, perhaps surpassed only by his adoptive pop, Highfather, and his biological daddy, Darkseid.  With strength and endurance on par with the DCU’s strongest heroes, Orion glides through the cosmos in his Astro-harness armed with the logic-defying universal tool known as the Mother Box.  He also has access to an immense cosmic power known as the Astro Force.

So now that DC’s Avengers have their heart, brains, and soul, who can complement them?

Vision – Vison is a super android that was constructed by one of the Avengers’ greatest enemies and designed to destroy the heroes.  However, he had a change of heart and ended up becoming one of the most stalwart and finest Avengers in history.

His DCU Analogue: Red Tornado – Tornado is the product of a wind spirit from the planet Rann merging with an android that was created by the JLA villain T.O. Morrow.  Like Vision, Red Tornado possesses immense power, and also like Vision, Red Tornado struggles with and seeks to understand the human condition, even falling in love with a human.

Scarlet Witch – Wanda Maximoff is a mutant with the ability to effect probability and reality itself.  She tries to channels her immense power and focus her fractured psyche by practicing the edicts of witchcraft and studying the discipline of magic.

Her DCU Analogue: Zatanna – Zatanna Zatara is one of the world’s most powerful magic-users and the premiere wrangler of the always dangerous chaos magic.

Hawkeye – With attitude for days, the wisecracking Clint Barton is the world’s greatest marksman and Earth’s Mightiest Archer.

His DCU Analogue: Green Arrow – Oliver Queen and Barton have so much in common they may as well be brothers.

Black Widow – Natasha Romanoff is SHIELD’s top super spy, one of the world’s best fighters, and secretly an important cog that keeps the entire super community running smoothly.

Her DCU Analogue: Manhunter – Kate Spenser, much like Matt Murdock, Black Widow’s ex-squeeze, is a lawyer that fights crime in the courtroom by day, and battles injustice on the streets at night as the costumed Manhunter.  She wears a body suit that increases all his physical attributes and wields a flashing staff with which she pummels crooks into submission.

There you have it folks, Guardian, Steel, Orion, Red Tornado, Zatanna, Green Arrow, and Manhunter, these are the seven heroes that would answer the call if ever DC assembled their version of the Avengers.

Be sure to tune in next week when we learn who would make the cut if Marvel gathered together their version of the Justice League.
