Happy Holidays from the Odinson,
I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas. 2020 is finally drawing to a merciful end. We have all, one way or another, suffered through varying degrees of hardships and tribulations this seemingly longer than usual year. And even though the road ahead to 2021 is uncertain, things do seem to be getting a little better.
If there is one hero who knows about dealing with adversity, trials and tribulations, setbacks, and light at the end of the tunnel it’s Daredevil.
Why is Daredevil Always Fighting above His Weight Class?
Blinded as a child, Matt Murdock’s other four senses were heightened to superhuman levels, giving him a radar sense which allows him to experience the world in a way no other human being can. He lost his father, a boxer, to a mob hit. He was trained to become a super human fighting machine by a ninja master. He is a devout Catholic. By day, Matt is an Attorney at Law. By night, he’s the masked crime fighter known as Daredevil.
His crime-fighting career has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. He has saved New York City countless times from the likes of Electro, Owl, Purple Man, and Mr. Fear, but, he has had to watch the women he loved, Elektra and Karen Page, die and not be able to do anything about it. He has toppled the criminal empire of the Kingpin several times, but he has also been handed his worse defeats by the same man, like in Born Again.
He’s a man of great passion, having been romantically connected to Black Widow, Elektra, Dakota North, Typhoid Mary, Echo, and others. He is a man of great conviction, as he is currently Doing Time in prison to prove that not even Daredevil is above the law. And, he is a man of great guilt. Even though he possesses no super human powers, other than his heightened senses, Matt always feels like there is more he can do to help.
And, it is because of this guilt and need to do more that he is constantly taking on opponents he has no business ever stepping into the ring with.
The Sub-Mariner – Prince Namor is the lord of the seven seas and easily one of the physically strongest beings on Earth. He has stood toe-to-with the likes of Hulk and Hercules! Yet, here is “mighty” Matt Murdock stepping in to stop one of Namor’s many temper tantrums.
This David vs. Goliath syndrome has become a bit of a Daredevil motif over the years.
Ka-Zar – Daredevil may be a great martial artist but Kevin Plunder is the Lord of the Savage Land and wrestles raptors before breakfast every morning.
The Mighty Thor – Matt, you might as well tug on Superman’s cape while you’re at it.
Doctor Doom – Matt proves he’s not afraid of getting tangled up with one of the scariest Big Bads in the Marvel U, and it’s a confrontation that leads to him crossing swords with the entire Fantastic Four!
Captain America – Daredevil may be one of the most finely tuned athletes and best fighters in the world, but anything he can do, Steve Rogers can also do, but he can do it harder, better, faster, stronger…
Scorpion – Speaking of stronger and faster… Scorpion is stronger and faster than Spider-Man and Peter has the proportionate strength of a human-sized spider! Think that’s going to deterred Daredevil from taking a shot at the title? Nope.
The Incredible Hulk – There is a fine line between stupidity and bravery and I think Matt Murdock just crossed it.
Spider-Man – If fighting the Hulk didn’t deter him, why would taking on a guy that is only 10 times stronger, faster, more agile, and smarter than he is make Matt turn the other cheek?
Wolverine – Look, Daredevil, you are, without a doubt, a very tough superhero, but you only walk away from this one because Logan is in a good mood, which is still a pretty lousy mood by normal standards, but good for him.
Hogun the Grim – If you’ve fought one Asgardian immortal, you’ve fought them all, right?
Ultron – Okay, even with Inhuman Royal Family members by your side, what good is kung fu against a WMD made out of Adamantium, a killer robot that gives Earth’s Mightiest Heroes nightmares? Oh, fair enough.
Mephisto – Matt, you do realize that you are only a “devil” by name? Mephisto is the actual lord of the underworld. You do realize that, right?
Ghost Rider – Well, if it’s guilt you crave, Matt, I’m sure the ole Rider’s Penance Stare can give you all the guilt you can handle, and then some.
Silver Surfer – Okay, Matt, it’s time for an intervention before you get yourself killed.
It can be said that Matt Murdock’s defeats are every bit as epic and rousing as his triumphs. He is, without a doubt, one of the toughest and most resilient men alive in the Marvel Universe. And, he is definitely not afraid of fighting above his weight class.
I’m going to end with this thought that occurred to me.
Since Daredevil’s senses are all heightened to the Nth degree, including his sense of touch, which he uses to read newsprint by running his fingers over the page, then every time someone rocks him in the jaw, shouldn’t the pain be amplified by 5? Even a normal non superhuman punch to the nose should drop Matt like a bad habit, right?
Thank you for allowing me to have some fun at ole Horn-Head’s expense. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Years and the Odinson will see you on the other side.
This is Odinson bidding thee farewell
